At 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving Friday, the Holidays Move From Blue Ridge to McCaysville

October 22, 2026

Fannin County has two holiday kickoffs on the Friday after Thanksgiving, and they don't overlap. Blue Friday in downtown Blue Ridge runs from noon to 5 p.m. on November 27, 2026. Light Up McCaysville starts at 5 p.m. that same day on the riverfront at 100 Blue Ridge Drive, and the tree is lit at dusk. One town finishes in the same hour the other one starts.

Blue Ridge's biggest night comes 24 hours later. That's when the Christmas parade and the lighting of the Great Tree take place, on Saturday, November 28. So if you live here, the weekend isn't a single crowded evening you have to pick. It's an afternoon in one town, an evening in another, and a full night back on Main Street. Both Blue Ridge days go ahead "rain, snow or shine," according to the organizers at Light Up Blue Ridge.

The Friday Relay, Hour by Hour

Here's how November 27 lines up when you lay the two towns' schedules side by side:

  1. Noon, Blue Ridge. Blue Friday opens downtown with merchant discounts, food vendors, and live entertainment. Santa photos start at the City Park gazebo.
  2. Noon to 5 p.m., Blue Ridge. Volunteers from Habitat for Humanity are at Santa's Mailbox to help children write their letters. Kids who drop one off get a handwritten reply in the mail a few days later, per the Blue Ridge Mountains CVB listing.
  3. 4:15 p.m., Blue Ridge. The Santa line closes. Children already in line are seen until 4:30.
  4. 5 p.m., both towns. Blue Friday wraps up downtown, and Light Up McCaysville begins.
  5. Dusk, McCaysville. The riverfront tree is lit. Santa is at the Riverwalk Shops for children who missed him in Blue Ridge, and the event wraps up at 7 p.m.

Santa appears twice in that sequence, which helps families with young kids. If the Blue Ridge line runs past 4:15, the CVB's McCaysville listing says he'll be at the Riverwalk Shops that evening. The McCaysville event calls itself "small-town charm, holiday cheer, and family fun" along the river, and it's a much smaller evening than Saturday's downtown parade.

Downtown Blue Ridge also has some new options for a late lunch between errands. Rose's Smash House, The Pullman, and Ferraro's Kitchen all opened on Main Street in 2026, according to Blue Ridge Community. The Pullman opened in spring. That makes this the first Blue Friday for all three. Rose's Smash House is at 588 East Main Street.

The Train Makes the Same Trip

The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway runs the same route as the Friday relay. Its four-hour Holiday Pavilion Tour is a round trip with a two-hour layover in McCaysville, Georgia, and Copperhill, Tennessee, and it runs on just three dates this season: November 27, December 5, and December 19. The first of those is Thanksgiving Friday.

The Pavilion Tour is separate from the one-hour Holiday Express. The railway's holiday page lists Holiday Special Rides from November 27 through December 24, 2026, all departing from the depot at 241 Depot Street in Blue Ridge. The railway's homepage lists the last Holiday Express as December 23, so if you're planning around Christmas Eve, check the booking calendar first.

Ride Length 2026 dates What's on board
Holiday Express One hour, no layover Nov. 27 to Dec. 23 or 24 Holiday music, a reading of "The Night Before Christmas," Santa, and a jingle bell and candy cane for kids
Holiday Pavilion Tour Four hours with a two-hour McCaysville/Copperhill layover Nov. 27, Dec. 5, Dec. 19 Round trip to the state line

The CVB's 2026 guide lists Holiday Express tickets at $56.99 for ages 13 and up and $46.99 for ages 2 to 12. Infants ride free. Hot chocolate and snacks are sold in the concession car. The railway's booking page marks the Holiday Express "Sells Out - Book Now!" That label isn't tied to any one date. Still, there are only about four weeks of holiday runs, and Thanksgiving weekend is when most visitors arrive. If you want grandkids on a particular departure in December, book now, a full month before the first run. Pavilion Tour departure times and prices for 2026 are on the railway's site.

Saturday Belongs to Main Street

Friday is spread across two towns. Saturday is all in downtown Blue Ridge. Entertainment runs on East Main from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Santa photos move to the pavilion from noon to 4:15. According to the organizers, Santa has to leave by 4:30 "so he has time to eat something and then be in the parade."

The parade starts at 5:30 p.m. The route, as posted on Light Up Blue Ridge, runs:

  • East on East Main from Church Street to Mountain Street
  • Down Mountain Street
  • Back along West Main to Depot Street

The Great Tree is lit right after the parade, at about 7 p.m. Because the route loops, both East Main and West Main get the parade, so you can watch near the end of your own street instead of crowding the start. Depot Street is where the parade ends, and it's also where the railway departs. So the block around the depot is busy on Saturday evening from both directions.

There's one tradeoff worth knowing if you're choosing between the two towns' lightings. McCaysville's tree goes up Friday at dusk, and the event wraps up by 7 p.m. Blue Ridge's tree goes up at about 7 p.m. Saturday, after a parade that starts 90 minutes earlier. If you have small kids who are done by 7, Friday's riverfront lighting is the one that fits.

The Arts Center Starts Before the Crowds Arrive

Some of the season's best indoor stops open before Thanksgiving. The Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association's Holiday Market opens November 15 and runs through December 19, Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It's closed Mondays. The market is at The Arts Center, 420 West Main Street, and sells handmade holiday gifts.

The Gingerbread Village is in the same building. It's a collection of community-built gingerbread houses, and visitors vote for their favorite. The CVB calendar shows it opening November 21, 2026, with hours of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., or 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays, and closed Mondays, through December 22. The Light Up Blue Ridge site lists a noon public opening on November 27 instead. Either way, the village is up by Blue Friday, and the week before Thanksgiving is the quiet time to see it.

That gives you a full holiday calendar:

Where the Weekend Leaves You

Once Saturday's tree is lit, the rest of the season runs on its own schedule. The Holiday Express keeps running into the days before Christmas, and the Pavilion Tour has its two December dates. The Holiday Market stays open through December 19, and the Gingerbread Village through December 22. If you missed something during Thanksgiving weekend, December 5 is the next date with a train to McCaysville. That's one more chance to see the river town lit up, just without Friday's crowds.
